4 Ways to Prevent Pneumonia in the Elderly

By , 9:00 am on

Pneumonia is one of the many preventable yet common health conditions aging adults are susceptible to. It occurs due to inflammation in the lungs caused by viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms. Santa Rosa senior care professionals discuss a few ways to prevent pneumonia in seniors.

1. Wash the Hands as Much as Possible

One of the easiest ways to prevent sickness is to wash the hands as often as possible. Germs can survive for weeks on everyday items such as doorknobs, and they can be transferred to a senior’s face. Seniors should wash their hands every time they come home and before every meal. They may also consider a small bottle of hand sanitizer whenever they’re out in public.

2. Get Vaccines and Booster Shots

Many different strains of pneumonia can be prevented with proper vaccination. Pneumonia vaccine needs to be injected only once, but some doctors suggest booster shots for seniors every three or four years. Seniors who are planning on getting pneumonia shots need to stay hydrated and get plenty of sleep to minimize the side effects.

3. Quit Smoking

Family members and professional caregivers in Santa Rosa should help seniors quit smoking. In addition to increasing the risk of throat and lung cancer, smoking cigarettes also increases the risk of contracting pneumonia. Tobacco products compromise the immune system and limit the body’s ability to heal itself. There are many different prescription products on the market to help seniors suppress their cravings for cigarettes.

4. Practice Good Dental Hygiene

The mouth is the first line of defense against many different viruses, including pneumonia. An untreated tooth or gum infection can cause secondary health complications such as a respiratory infection. Seniors should visit a dentist at least twice a year to check for oral health conditions. They must also brush and floss at least three times a day to remove lingering food debris.
