Best Summer Fruits for Senior Health

Summer has arrived, and so have the delicious seasonal fruits offering tons of health benefits, including improved metabolism and immunity. Sonoma Home Care Assistance has put together the following list of the season’s best fruits for seniors.

Blueberries

High fiber, low calorie, and full of vitamins C and K, blueberries support heart health and protect against Alzheimer’s and some cancers. They also contain anti-inflammatory properties.

Papaya

With vitamins A and C and high in folate, papaya is antibacterial, good for the digestive system, and can help reduce stress.

Strawberries

Vitamins A, B, C and E plus manganese provide sun protection, immune system support and protect against cancer and cell mutations. Strawberries are also high in fiber, which makes these berries good for digestive health.

Nectarines

Nectarines have twice as much vitamin A and significantly more potassium than peaches. This stone fruit is also full of minerals and antioxidants and supports the heart, blood pressure, digestion and weight maintenance.

Apricots

One of the healthiest fruits, apricots provide antioxidants difficult to obtain from other fruits, vitamins that protect eyesight, are high in fiber but low in calories, and are good for inflammation. 

Plums

With vitamins A, C and high amounts of beta-carotene, plums are great for the immune system, fighting off infection, eyesight and increased iron absorption. Plums are a natural laxative and are also good for fending off bone mass loss that leads to osteoporosis.

Watermelon

Watermelon’s most obvious function is helping those who consume it stay hydrated, but it is also full of vitamins, including B6 for brain health and lycopene for fighting heart disease and cancer. It is also high in potassium, which promotes nerve and muscle function, and has amino acids important for a healthy cardiovascular system.
